Explore the stories of volunteers working at Seaton Delaval Hall

Our experience of heritage sites is largely influenced by stories of the past and our expectations of what these stories should be. This collaborative project looked at this idea more closely by engaging with volunteer and staff at Seaton Delaval Hall in Northumberland, part of the National Trust. Over time, volunteers and staff become experts on the house, landscape and collections. They come to know the property inside out and skillfully capture the imagination of visitors when visiting the site.

This project aimed to encourage volunteers and staff to use their existing storytelling expertise, tap into their creativity and reimagine the site through their personal experiences of Seaton Delaval Hall. We invite you to experience some of their personal stories and learn more about why those who work and volunteer at the Hall keep doing so. These are stories of beginnings, of growing, of observing the space at times when visitors aren’t there, of dreaming, of lasting memories.

Notice

The resulting work produced by staff and volunteers was originally to be displayed as a short-term Virtual Reality installation at Seaton Delaval Hall. Due to the world emergency caused by COVID-19, we have made the materials available online. We hope that you will be able to reconnect with volunteers, their stories, and perhaps share your personal ones too.

We successfully exhibited the work in site in spring 2021.
